5.3 Prudent-use principles for antimicrobial agents
Page last updated: September 2016
Ensure that the submission for a new antimicrobial agent considers the government-endorsed prudent-use principles proposed by the 1999 report of the Joint Expert Advisory Committee on Antibiotic Resistance50 and the ‘General principles of antimicrobial use’ contained in Therapeutic guidelines: antibiotic51 when considering target populations. Provide relevant data about the development of resistance, as appropriate (cross-reference Section 2 if the development or potential development of resistance has been demonstrated to affect health outcomes). Address any issues, and indicate whether any aspect of any restriction requested in response to Subsection 1.4 is designed to minimise the development of resistance.
